International Grand Polaris Sean D. Housen, Sr. Issues Statement

(Baltimore, MD) - Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. mourns the loss of retired General and Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, and we offer our condolences to the general's family.

General Powell was a true American patriot. Born and raised in the South Bronx in New York City, the general was a graduate of the City College of New York, where he participated in ROTC and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army. He was a White House Fellow under the administration of President Lyndon Johnson and rose to the rank of four-star general. General Powell served in Republican and Democratic administrations and in addition to being the first Black Secretary of State, served as National Security Advisor and the first Black Chairman of the Joints Chief of Staff. The general also served as Chairman of America's Promise, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to mobilizing the nation's youth to public service.

General Powell twice received the nation's highest honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and also received the Congressional Gold Medal, the Presidential Citizens Medal, and the Secretary of State Distinguished Service Medal.

Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. has a history of service in the military and recognizes the tremendous sacrifices of our women and men in uniform. Today, our thoughts and prayers are with the Powell family and his many friends and colleagues, and the enlisted members of the United States Army.

International Grand Polaris Housen stated, "We are pleased that Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. will be represented today by my immediate predecessor, Brother Andre Manson. The meeting today will take place against the backdrop of several urgent matters confronting the Biden administration. The topics on the agenda include a discussion on voting rights and efforts in certain states to implement laws that will curtail access to the ballot for Black people and people of color; the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on communities of color, and equitable health care in the United States.

"These are all issues," remarked Mr. Housen, "that impact Iotas and our families across the country. Today, the fraternity has over three hundred chapters nationwide and overseas. Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. became a member of the National Pan Hellenic Council in 1997, formally transforming the NPHC into the 'Divine 9,' a designation for the fraternities and sororities that were originally founded to include Black students in Greek life.
